Executive Assistant | Contract & Compliance Lead
Karen Southworth
With over 30 years of experience in customer service, legal administration, and compliance, Karen Southworth serves as the Executive Assistant and Contract & Compliance Lead for Colorado Asphalt Works, Inc. Her role blends high-level administrative coordination with a firm grasp of the legal, regulatory, and operational demands of the asphalt and concrete industry.
Karen’s path into the asphalt and concrete industry may not have followed a traditional route, but her impact has been both relevant and substantial. Holding dual degrees in Forensics and Criminal Psychology, she spent over five years as a Criminal Law Administrator, managing attorneys and overseeing day-to-day operations within a high-volume law firm. She later brought her regulatory knowledge to the State of Colorado’s Housing Division, where she worked in the Mobile Home Park Oversight Program (MHPOP). In that role, she led efforts around park sale compliance, facilitated dispute resolution, investigated formal complaints, and engaged directly with park owners to enforce regulatory standards, all while navigating the intersection of housing law, public interest, and fair practice.
Now, Karen brings that same meticulous attention and drive to the construction industry, handling contracts, invoicing, vendor compliance, and legal escalations related to non-payments, liens, and special circumstances. Whether she’s managing back-end documentation or renegotiating contracts to strike a win-win balance between client and company, Karen leads with clarity, compassion, and results.
Fully bilingual, a certified Notary Agent, and a seasoned public speaker, Karen has also created training programs, presented regulatory guidance to state divisions, and supported multilingual outreach to underserved communities. She has a sharp legal mind, but perhaps even more valuable, she listens, she leads, and she lifts the people around her.
Outside of work, Karen is a creative soul with a deep love for storytelling and connection. She is a children’s book author, currently writing a non-fiction memoir, and the host of a podcast that gives voice to real, human stories. She loves gardening, homesteading, music, movies, dancing, and enjoying Colorado’s great outdoors with her daughter and grandson, whom she absolutely adores. She’s a believer in team synchronicity, open dialogue, and showing up, fully and authentically, for both people and purpose.
Karen is the heartbeat behind the scenes and the advocate in the details, making sure no loose ends are left behind and every voice, contract, and customer is treated with integrity.
